5 QUESTIONS

187

As the Holiday Collection from King Stampede drops at Boundless and worldwide. We ambushed designer James Farsetta aka Jimmy Papers with our classic Boundess NY 5 Questions.

1. Way before you were designing for King Stampede, you were shipping records from an apartment in Bushwick, BKLYN for the site that would eventually become Boundless NY, Vinyl Connect. Are you surprised with how successful both King Stampede and Boundless NY have become? Describe 2 big moments that stick out in your mind as turning points for both brands?

Hard work and persistence always pays off, so no I am not surprised at all. I also know that focused energy is something that is impossible to stop. We busted our ass and gave up the fast track approach to present something unique to the market. KS’s turning point came in august 2005 at magic, it was the season we put out the full body polka dot tees. No one in the states was really fucking with allover prints or polka dots so it was super fresh to see on the rack and got us a lot of recognition. Also that was the show where we brought our our new era game to the table. Boundless’s turning point is harder to define but it def came into play when the primary focus went from Music to Fashion. That was about 2 years ago.

2. A Vanilla Dutch or A Grape One ?

Grape

3. King Stampede has developed a cult following in the past 5 years. What can you contribute that underground following to?

Were not like many of the other brands, we are not a brand that everyone gets and instantly relates too. Our approach is different and we have developed a very specific type of following as a result.

4. Your a family man and balancing work with life is tricky sometimes. Where do you take the family to relax? Where do you draw the line to keep both in check?

The balance is definitely hard. My wife and son always come first. I love work and am always accused of working too much, but my family will never feel that. When we are together we focus on each-other. We play music, we paint, we go on hikes we do things that allow us too laugh and enjoy each-other. When I am working I apply the same idea and intense focus so that tasks get completed and goals get reached at an extremely efficient pace. I don’t check my emails and talk on i chat and bullshit all day, I lock in, focus and hit the ground running.

ARTIST PROFILE :: MARK RYDEN

183
Mark Ryden came to preeminence in the 1990’s during a time when many artists, critics and collectors were quietly championing a return to the art of painting. With his masterful technique and disquieting content, Ryden quickly became one of the leaders of this movement on the West Coast.

Upon first glance Ryden’s work seems to mirror the Surrealists’ fascination with the subconscious and collective memories. However, Ryden transcends the initial Surrealists’ strategies by consciously choosing subject matter loaded with cultural connotation. His dewy vixens, cuddly plush pets, alchemical symbols, religious emblems, primordial landscapes and slabs of meat challenge his audience not necessarily with their own oddity but with the introduction of their soothing cultural familiarity into unsettling circumstances.

Viewers are initially drawn in by the comforting beauty of Ryden’s pop-culture references, then challenged by their circumstances, and finally transported to the artist’s final intent – a world where creatures speak from a place of childlike honesty about the state of mankind and our relationships with ourselves, each other and our past.

Mark Ryden was born in Medford Oregon. He received a BFA in 1987 from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles where he paints slowly and happily amidst his countless collections of trinkets, statues, skeletons, books, paintings and antique toys.
