NAS' "GREATEST HITS": A TRACK-BY-TRACK JOURNEY WITH THE PRIDE OF QUEENS
Nas’ Greatest Hits: A Track-By-Track Journey With the Pride of Queens
Written By:EVAN SERPICK Posted Nov 06, 2007 2:35 PM
Today, the pride of Queens, Nas, drops a Greatest Hits album that spans from 1994’s Illmatic — probably the best debut in hip-hop history — to 2004’s Street Disciple. No tracks from his most recent album, Hip Hop Is Dead, were included (his last label, Columbia, put out the Hits package), but Nasir says not to worry. “I think it’s better to start off slow,” he explains in an exclusive RS track-by-track analysis. “I’m thinking about doing it again and taking it to another level with a box set. I don’t think there’s a box set in hip-hop. Maybe mine will be the first.” Also missing is “Ether,” the MC’s brutal takedown of Jay-Z. ” ‘Ether’ is a battle record that was not really appropriate right now,” he explains. “That’s not where my head is. I was in a different place. The Greatest Hits was about a career, and that’s just one piece, so I didn’t want to mess it up with that song.”
The microphone fiend took us through each track on Hits, from the only new song, “Surviving the Times,” on which he recounts the notable people and moments of his career, to “Bridging the Gap,” a collaboration with his jazz musician father, Olu Dara.
“Surviving the Times”
“Actually, I had it done a good while ago. I forgot I had the record. It was just perfect to go with the Greatest Hits. It just came from a conversation. I needed people around to remind me of certain things that happened, so I got a lot of information from somebody that was hanging around while I was in the studio. It’s crazy, because when I talk about people from a whole other rap era, I don’t know if people understand how much that meant to me, just coming up around legends like Kool G Rap and Eric B and Large Professor and people like Akinyele who was around in the early stages that I met through Large Professor from a rap group named Main Source that most cats today never even heard of.” CONTINUED HERE

HAPPY(BELATED) ONE YEAR BIRTHDAY TO 143 ROEBLING STREET # 1B
In honor of our new site and 143 Bling Roe’s birthday… I present to you the throwback at Noon.
Via High SnobietyQ1 : Hi Nick, how is it going ?
Its going pretty good. I definetely have my hands full at the moment. We are about to ship King Stampede, fall 06’, and we are also set to open up the Boundless shop in Brooklyn, NY any moment now. I’m super stoked for that, its a long time coming.
I am the owner/founder of King Stampede Clothing and Boundless NY (www.boundlessny.com). I am from the east coast NY/NJ and I like to hustle.
Well its a tricky answer because before King Stampede and Boundless NY, I owned an online music store called Vinyl Connect (www.vinylconnect.com). We were an online music store specializing in vinyl records. Now Vinyl Connect has evolved to Boundless NY, which is a fully stocked online lifestyle shop still carrying vinyl records but specializing in clothing, apparel, kicks, books, mags, skateboards, etc… Everything we are doing is based on our lifestyle turned into a business. This includes Vinyl Connect, King Stampede, Boundless NY, and so on. King Stampede came slightly after Vinyl Connect, but before Boundless NY.
King Stampede and Boundless NY consist of myself, James Farsetta, Peter Leonard, Mikol Stambaugh, Teddy King, Tesley Snipes, and Jevon Wilcox.
(James) In essence New York is a cultural melting pot. You have different people from different walks of life experiencing completely different things simultaneously. The energy is fucking insane in New York. Half of the things I learned, I picked up from tuning into that very same energy. I’ve been here my whole life and traveled this country countless times. No matter where I am, at one point or another, all I want to do is come back to New York. In a nut shell N.Y. influences me because its in me.

Super Heady Vibes for our Cosmic Brothers and Sisters. Heavily influenced by all things un-trendy, un-explored and un-expected. This one is for the harvesters not the customers.
Well I have been friends with Danny since he was 12. Danny Supa, Vinny Ponte (Rival) and myself would always hang out and skate together. Back then Danny could do just about any trick we could think of switchstance, the King Stampede/Danny Supa connection was already there. We worked very closely with Danny and his family to create a package that was dope, yet also within the lines of his rich family heritage We will be doing more in the near future with Danny Supa and our skateboarding division of KS.
Yes we will expand on our cut and sew items. That will be the future right there. We have some very exciting things planned for the spring and summer. We’re just getting warmed up, getting our feet wet, so there’s much more to follow. If people felt what we did with New Era 59/50’s up to this point, all I can say is wait until the spring and summer lines drop. We have some heavy things cookin up in the lab.
Well thanks for the kind words. I’m humbled by hearing that. We are about to open up shop at 143 Roebling St. Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY. The shop will add something that has been missing to this very rapid growing section of Brooklyn. The Boundless shop is going to be unlike any shop in NYC period. It is a true lifestyle shop consisiting of clothing, apparel, kicks, music, books, mags, skateboards, and anything els we feel like selling.
KS FITTEDs AND 3 1/2 YEAR BIDS
You saw the video of Prodigy Rocking the KS Fitted, right…3 1/2 years right now is no joke for the dude. Did the alchemist turn him in…? or did P actually have the hip hop police following his every move…
the swift chancellor what do you think?
(Recently) On SOHH.com P was talking about his gun charge and upcoming 3 1/2 year bid. Always loved the HNIC and the Mobb since I heard Shook Ones in college. Part 2, wasn’t up on Part 1 or Juvenille Hell.
P was talking about the Hip Hop police targeting him and made a comment about how they are not targeting someone like Kanye. The poignant comment was a thinly veiled attack on Ye’s wardrobe that remain a serious point of contention.
P said something to the effect that with Kanye’s tight clothes you could see if he had a joint on him from the outside. Ha ha ha. But it got me thinking..
I’m 34. I have boys who sat right next to me pounding E&J in Charlottesville and 880 Boynton because P said it. Some of these dudes are Feds, lawyers, asst DA’s, and NYPD now. These are robably the folks who make up the Hip Hop police. Rappers should know this. These cops are not Barney Miller dudes who think we are all the same. These are dudes who have heard you talk about ‘stabbing your brain with your nose bone’ since the 90’s. Shit, they probably have people who did dirt with you. (I have one boy who was a real hustler growing up who is now a CO in charge of several dudes from his old crew.)
If they want to make an arrest they know who to follow. Shit, if they didn’t follow you they would be idiots. B, you’ve talking about catching bodies and holding heat since 1993!
Of course they don’t follow the Louis Viton Don. All he talks about is clothes and his mom. They’re not following Will.i.am or Kweli or KRS or Little Brother. Why? LISTEN TO THEIR DAMN RECORDS AND LISTEN TO YOURS.
They follow TI and J Prince and C-Murder.
You should know this and not carry around an unlicensed burner. Now P is not asking for sympathy and that makes me like him even more. He made a mistake and is ready to do his time. But I don’t want to hear one more ‘gangsta’ rapper complain about the Hip-Hop police.
Don’t want trouble? Hire a licensed bodyguard. Rap about Christian Dior and reperations. Stop wearing 8x t’s. Wear tight red pants to award shows and you’ll be good.
EVERYDAY, I AM HUSTLING.
Simian Mobile Disco: “Hustler (A-Trak Remix)”
A-Trak has already expressed his admiration for Simian Mobile Disco’s record-thieving dance single “Hustler”. Hey, so have we. Last time out, the Montreal-based DJ for Kanye West mashed the UK electronic outfit’s track up against Rick Ross’s “Hustlin’” on this year’s quite good Dirty South Dance, a move previously attempted by Cadence Weapon. This time, A-Trak simply remixes “Hustler”, dropping the pitch in the sticky-fingered narrator’s voice for extra drama, but keeping the cyborg electro-house beats blaring.
Well, except when the narrator first starts speaking—then A-Trak cuts the beats out altogether. Elsewhere, sinister new synths stretch out over SMD’s futuristic groove, and James Brown might be in there somewhere, too, shouting, “Get up!” (as was his wont). I haven’t heard all of the other remixes planned for the latest issue of the “Hustler” single, but for now, A-Trak’s beefed-up effort would be the one to steal, if only it was on an official release (there are no firm plans for this track yet). Famous last words: “What the fuck?!!”
